Bridge Operations

The Sacramento County Department of Transportation (SACDOT) operates four moveable bridges over the Sacramento River and Georgiana Slough.  SACDOT works to ensure the use of these bridges is convenient for vessels and minimizes traffic delays for motorists.

Bridges & Staffing Hours

The following is a list of SACDOT bridges and hours of operation:

Freeport Bridge

• November 1st to April 30th – Bridge to open on 4-hour notice, Call Rio Vista Bridge at 707-374-2134.
• May 1st to September 30th – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Georgiana Slough Bridge

• November 1st to April 30th – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• May 1st to October 31st – 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Tyler Island Bridge

• November 1st to April 30th – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• May 1st to October 31st – 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Walnut Grove Bridge

• November 1st to April 30th – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• May 1st to October 31st – 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Bridge Opening Procedure

When requesting a bridge opening during the hours of operations listed above, vessels should contact the bridge by radio (marine Band ch 9) or use a whistle signal - one long, one short.  To contact the tenders at each bridge by phone, call the Rio Vista Bridge at 707-374-2134.  The Rio Vista Bridge is maintained by Caltrans. 

After Hours & Holiday Bridge Openings 

For bridge openings after hours and holidays, call the Rio Vista Bridge at 707-374-2134. ​The bridge will be opened within a 4-hour time period.
