Bridge Height-Weight Restrictions

Sacramento County follows State of California Bridge Department guidelines for rating and evaluating allowable loads on all County bridges.

Many bridges in Sacramento County were constructed in the 1930’s and were designed for the types of loads legal at the time.  Some of these bridges cannot carry today’s legal loads, and these facilities have been posted accordingly. The use of Sacramento County bridges for other than legal and posted loads requires written authorization from the Department of Transportation. Issuing an authorization to allow overweight loads is solely at the discretion of Sacramento County, and the Department of Transportation can deny or refuse to issue permits.

The height of movable bridges are often restricted due to the truss architecture required to maintain the structure while rotating or lifting in order to open the waterway for marine vessels.  While the height openings were adequate when they were initially constructed for vehicles at that time, many vehicles are taller or towing loads that are taller than the openings allow for on these structures.  Please note the height limits posted on each of these restricted bridges and double check the height of your vehicle and/or load prior to crossing.
