Freeport-Delta Gateway Monument Project Phase 1

Introduction

A Delta Community Design Study Recommendations Report by the Delta Protection Commission (July 2020) was published as a guide for policymakers and the community.  In the report, action items and physical improvements were identified that could enhance the quality of life and historic character of Delta communities such as Freeport for residents, visitors, and business owners.  Freeport is designated as one of eleven ‘legacy’ communities within the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta National Heritage Area (NHA).

Project Description

Phase One of the Freeport-Delta Gateway Monuments project will focus on the conceptual design of two gateway monuments along Freeport Boulevard (State Highway 160), and a history interpretative sign.  The intent is to feature the community’s historic identity and location as the northern gateway to the Delta.  There will be an effort to engage the community and stakeholders in a series of community meetings to introduce the project and gain concurrence on a preferred design alternative.  The County will coordinate with Caltrans for preliminary approval of the monuments and signage to be placed within or adjacent to the State right-of-way.

A Phase Two effort to implement the project will be dependent on a second grant allocation.
